There was a lot of activity at Goodison Park during the summer transfer season, which is to say that Everton had an exciting transfer window.

Players like Alex Iwobi, Tom Cannon, and Ellis Simms were among those who left the team, while Beto, Youssef Chermiti, and Ashley Young were among those who joined.

Football supporters are naturally most excited by new arrivals, but Everton fans didn’t have much to cheer about this summer considering that only newly promoted Luton Town spent less than the Toffees.

Everton spent a total of £38.7 million on new players, while Luton spent a league-low £9.5 million, according to Sky Sports (2 September).

Burnley and Sheffield United, two other recently promoted teams, each spent a total of £54.2 million.

Sean Dyche and his team should be concerned that the Toffees are currently joined by the Hatters and the Clarets in the Premier League relegation zone, despite Everton having played one more game than the two teams.

The paucity of expenditure at Goodison Park was maybe expected, though, given the club’s previous financial difficulties.

The Toffees have been perilously close to being relegated to the Championship for the past two seasons, and this season, as a direct result of the continued financial problems, a third straight relegation battle is likely to be on the horizon.

New strikers Beto and Chermiti offer some hope, but the offensive pair already under tremendous pressure considering that the £38.7 million transfer budget was primarily intended to bring them to Goodison Park.
