According to The Echo, Sunderland has brought Kelechi Chibueze to the Academy of Light for a trial.

In preparation for a prospective transfer to the North East, the 19-year-old former goalkeeper for Leicester City has been practicing with Graeme Murty’s under-21 team on Wearside.

Chibueze, a London native, joined the Foxes in 2020 after graduating from Chelsea’s youth program.

Chibueze, who is also of Nigerian heritage, has primarily played in the Premier League for under-18s, and she has also earned four caps for England’s under-16 team.

the signing of With Adam Richardson, 19, out injured, Nathan Bishop, 23, has been starting for Sunderland’s under-21 team as one of the allowed over-age players.

After the summer releases of Harrison Bond, 19, who later joined for Gateshead, and Jacob Carney, 22, who is now at CD Castellon, a void has developed in Sunderland’s goalkeeping department.

Ben Metcalf, Dan Cameron, and Matthew Young, three 16-year-old prospects, have opportunities to earn experience above their age group as a result of the departures of Carney and Bond and Richardson’s injury. Young also joined Tony Mowbray’s first team squad in the United States during preseason.

However, there is still a vacancy in the Academy of Light, and Chibueze’s trial with the team suggests that Sunderland’s management is thinking about bringing in another goalkeeper to Wearside. The Echo is informed that no decision has yet been made on Chibueze’s future, and that the player will continue on a temporary basis for the time being while he is still undergoing a trial at Sunderland
