Reece James signed his contract with the blue waves of Stamford Bridge, committing his peak years to Chelsea until 2032.

The fax machine in the back office of Cobham hummed, spitting out a final, crisp sheet of paper. The ink was barely dry, but the weight of the room was unmistakable.

Reece James sat in the leather armchair, a blue pen resting between his fingers. Outside, the London rain tapped a steady rhythm against the massive glass windows overlooking the training pitches where he had first kicked a football as a boy of six.

His phone buzzed on the table. Social media feeds were already going wild, a swirling storm of ellipses and frantic fan theories. “REECE JAMES HAS SIGNED A 5-YEAR CONTRACT WITH…” the clickbait headlines blared, cutting off right before the truth. The internet held its collective breath, half-expecting some outlandish twist, a sudden flight to a continental giant, or a midnight hijack by an oil-rich rival.

A shadow fell across the doorway. Mauricio—or whoever was holding the tactical reins this week—smiled, leaning against the frame. “You ready to break some hearts out there, Captain?”

Reece looked up and grinned. He didn’t need a five-year quick fix. When the pen finally met the paper, the scratch of the nib wrote a much longer story. Not a move away, not a dramatic exit to unfamiliar colors, but an extension that stretched all the way to 2032—a full six-year pledge that meant his heart stayed right where it belonged.

He slid the folder shut, stood up, and pulled the familiar blue captain’s armband over his sleeve. Let the internet keep its ellipses. The blank space at the end of the sentence was filled with blue ink.
