FACT CHECK: Has ESPN Confirmed a New $80.6 Million Barcelona Stadium Project for 2026?

Social media has recently been flooded with eye-catching headlines claiming that ESPN has confirmed a newly approved $80.6 million stadium renovation project for FC Barcelona stretching into 2026. These posts often cut off abruptly with the infamous “…See More” tag, baiting users to click.

However, a closer look at the actual financials and official club updates reveals that these headlines are heavily distorted clickbait. The reality of Barcelona’s massive Espai Barça project is far larger—and more complicated—than these rumors suggest.

The Real Numbers: A Multi-Billion Euro Reality

The figure of “$80.6 million” circulating online is a massive understatement. The total renovation cost for the Spotify Camp Nou has long surpassed the 1-billion-euro mark and is currently projecting closer to €2 billion ($2.3 billion).

Rather than approving a minor $80.6 million fund, FC Barcelona delegate members officially approved a massive €510 million ($585 million) financing package. This emergency injection was required to cover the mounting economic damage caused by extensive construction delays. The breakdown of this newly approved funding includes:

• €300 million ($344 million): Dedicated explicitly to finishing construction, building new facilities, and implementing advanced technological solutions inside the stadium.

• €210 million: Formed via Media Notes issuances, backed directly by the club’s audiovisual revenues.

The Twist: Barcelona Must Move Out Again

The part of the story contains the real logistical headache for the Catalan giants. While Barcelona has been playing its home fixtures in a partially reopened, 62,000-capacity Camp Nou, the club will be forced to entirely vacate the stadium again.

Club treasurer Ferran Olivé confirmed that Barça will finish out its current campaign at home, but will temporarily relocate back to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc.
