Loris Karius is set to leave Newcastle United when his contract expires at the end of the season, sources have told Football Insider.

Karius has instructed his agent to find him a new club in Italy after struggling for minutes at St James’ Park.

The German goalkeeper will not be offered an extension on his current deal with the Magpies and will leave on a free once his contract expires in June this year.

The 30-year-old has so far made just two appearances since joining the club in 2022, having largely been backup to Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle could be on lookout for Loris Karius replacement

It’s been a frustrating couple of seasons for Karius after failing to make much of an impression on Tyneside.

The German perhaps thought he would earn more opportunities during this campaign after being handed a one-year extension last summer.

But that hasn’t proven to be the case for him after he’s only made one appearance this season, coming in the 4-1 defeat against Arsenal back in February.

It’s understandable the keeper wants to go away and potentially secure more regular first-team football elsewhere once his contract runs out in a few weeks’ time.

The move probably suits all parties as Newcastle may feel as though they could bring in a cheaper option as their third-choice stopper given that Karius is likely to still command a reasonable wage after spending six years at Liverpool.

Eddie Howe will likely already be scouring the market for any potential options he can look to add in the goalkeeping department.
