After spending seven years at the CBS Arena, former Coventry City midfielder Liam Kelly signed for League One promotion-hopeful Rotherham United. The 34-year-old Kelly has committed to a two-year stay at New York Stadium.
During a fruitful stint that saw the Sky Blues promoted from League Two and League One, the seasoned midfielder made 180 appearances. He also came dangerously close to helping City secure promotion to the Premier League in 2023 during a penalty shootout.
Kelly was a pillar of the team under Mark Robins as it ascended the EFL ladder, but in more recent seasons, as Robins upgraded and developed his team to contend at the top, Kelly found it more difficult to get minutes.
Surprisingly, Kelly is Steve Evans’ fifth addition during a remarkably busy summer that also saw the additions of Reece James, Sean Raggett, Jonson Clarke-Harris, and Joe Rafferty.
After an incredible FA Cup campaign, Kelly, Simon Moore, Dermi Lusala, and Bradley Stretton all left City at the conclusion of their contracts, with the team narrowly missing out on the play-offs. Luke Bell and Callum O’Hare have received new contracts, and Luis Binks has rejoined his parent team.
Upon his departure from the Sky Blues being confirmed, Kelly said: “The time is right. I am 34, the club are going out and spending money getting players in, and they are trying to get to the Premier League. That is the direction the club is going in, and I am sure they will get there eventually, but I am looking forward to moving onto something else in the summer, going out there and trying to achieve something again.
