Portsmouth are in advanced talks with defender Conor Shaughnessy over a new contract at Fratton Park, sources have told Football Insider.

Portsmouth are keen to reward the 27-year-old with a new improved deal before his current contract expires in June 2025.

The former Republic of Ireland youth international played a key role in helping the Hampshire club secure promotion to the Championship last season.

The centre-back made 49 appearances in all competitions across the campaign after arriving from Burton Albion last summer.

Conor Shaughnessy new contract on the cards after Portsmouth promotion

Shaughnessy started his professional career at Leeds United after he was handed a contract at Elland Road in 2016.

After taking in loan spells with Hearts, Mansfield Town and Burton, the Irishman joined Rochdale on a permanent deal in January 2021 after making just 15 senior appearances for Leeds.

The centre-back signed for Burton in the summer of 2021 and played 70 games for the club before Portsmouth snapped him up last year.

Shaughnessy played a vital role in his side’s promotion to the Championship after starting in all 45 of his appearances across the campaign.

Portsmouth are now in advanced talks over an improved new contract with the defender before he heads into the final year of his deal at Fratton Park.

John Mousinho’s side are looking to put the pieces in place as they prepare for their first season in the second tier in 12 years.

The Hampshire club secured their first summer signing last week after Football Insider revealed they had won the race to secure the services of defender Jordan Williams.
