Frank McAvennie believes Newcastle striker Callum Wilson would be the “perfect” signing this summer, but only if West Ham can keep him fit.
According to the Daily Mirror [25 June, page 54], the Magpies have set a £10million price tag for the 32-year-old striker, with the Hammers weighing up a move for the former Bournemouth man.
Wilson has played second fiddle to Alexander Isak at St James’ Park in recent seasons but has still managed to score 48 goals in 108 appearances. His injury record has raised concerns, however.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “It would be a worry. Although, that’s me thinking of David Moyes’ way. It depends on the new manager. If Callum Wilson joins the club and we play a different way, getting chances into the box, Wilson is perfect – he’ll score goals.
“Yes, he does have injury issues. But the more he plays, the better that will get. I can’t see it happening because he’s not a West Ham player, but he might be because we don’t know how this manager will play.
“For £10million, you can’t get a striker that can score his goals. £10million is nothing in this market for a striker.”
West Ham United to seal Callum Wilson transfer this summer
It is impossible for a striker to reach 88 goals and 23 assists in the Premier League without being a talisman in the final third of the pitch.
Wilson has impressed with both Newcastle and Bournemouth, proving his ability on the pitch numerous times. It is his injury record that is the major concern during this summer transfer window.
With the Magpies looking to offload players due to PSR, Wilson looks set to be sacrificed in order to save the likes of Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, so the Hammers could really benefit for £10million.
While Michail Antonio’s future looks set to continue at the London Stadium next season, the Jamaican has his own injury worries, which could seal Wilson’s move to the Irons.
