Leeds United have had a six-figure bid for Alex Cairns accepted by Salford City, sources have told Football Insider.

United have now reached a full agreement over a deal to re-sign the 31-year-old goalkeeper, who has also agreed personal terms.

Cairns’ contract at Salford is set to expire in 2025, and with no new deal on the table, Leeds took advantage of the uncertainty to swoop.

This comes shortly after Football Insider exclusively revealed on Sunday that Leeds had registered their interest in Cairns and were lining up a formal bid.

Leeds United agree deal to re-sign Alex Cairns from Salford City

Cairns came through the academy at Leeds and signed his first professional deal at Elland Road in 2011, but made just one senior appearance for the club.

After moving from Chesterfield to Rotherham, he eventually landed at Fleetwood, making 240 appearances for the club during their spell in League One.

He then made the move to Salford after a successful loan spell in 2022-23, going on to make 77 appearances and keep 12 clean sheets.

Cairns featured 51 times last season, keeping eight clean sheets as he saw his side narrowly avoid relegation from League Two.

The departure of Kristoffer Klaesson, who joined Polish side Rakow Czestochowa on a permanent deal on 7 July, saw Leeds move quickly to land his replacement.

Not only will Cairns fill in as Klaesson’s replacement as their third-choice goalkeeper, but he will also help the club meet the EFL’s registration rules.

Clubs in the Championship must register at least eight homegrown players in their 25-man squad, with Cairns helping Leeds reach that quota.
