Cross, Beren

Although it didn’t strike out as the kind of performance that called for five changes for the following game, that’s how it has fallen for me after Wednesday’s draw with Hull City. In these early stages of the season, Luke Ayling’s performance has fluctuated, but with Djed Spence sidelined and Jamie Shackleton having a difficult week, I don’t see any other options.

Even though Charlie Cresswell is struggling, it’s tough to overlook the organization and leadership Liam Cooper would bring to the team if he came back tomorrow. Even though it means having two left-footed center backs, the captain is a clear choice to replace Joe Rodon.

Despite the worries before to the international break, Archie Gray continued to start games and finished the one on Wednesday. His effect has, nevertheless, appeared a Georgino Rutter will start on the right wing at this time per usual. Due to Wilfried Gnonto’s injury and Daniel James’ difficulty on Wednesday, I would turn to Jaidon Anthony for his entire debut on the left wing.

Joel Piroe would be accompanied by Crysencio Summerville, who was tailing from Wednesday’s performance, in my side. I have trouble seeing how Rutter’s speed can be exploited as a nine if Watford does sit deeper. Before turning to shoot from close range, the Dutch striker can hold the ball up and allow Summerville and company to play off him.

A three-game week makes choosing a team a challenging balancing act. In fact, just assembling this starting lineup gave me a headache, so I shudder to imagine how Daniel Farke is feeling as he works to finalize his starting lineup.

The choice that comes in net with Illan Meslier receiving the nod after three straight clean sheets is the easiest of the bunch, so we’ll start there. Things then become a little more challenging.

Luke Ayling gets the nod on the right and I’d start him if he can start three games in a row.

To freshen up the midfield, I want to see Glen Kamara play from the opening kickoff at Elland Road for the first time. Ethan Ampadu has perhaps been my player of the season thus far. Gray would be better suited to playing in the number 10 position as his career continues, as I previously mentioned when naming my starting XI for the Millwall game. I also saw that Gray did appear to be playing significantly higher in possession at Hull, of course before being sent out.

That may be the answer because Joel Piroe has had mixed results in that position. Piroe should be kept in the starting lineup and elevated to the position of the number nine, with Georgio Rutter being moved to the right flank.

Rutter would be free to enter and try to make things happen on the break with Ayling overlapping. Summerville will now be replacing Wilfried Gnonto on the left side of the field.

Meslier, Ayling, Struijk, Cooper, Byram, Ampadu, Kamara, Rutter, Gray, Summerville, and Piroe make up Will’s starting lineup.
