Leeds United have confirmed their new club captain for the 24/25 season in the form of Ethan Ampadu, with Pascal Struijk and Illan Meslier vice captains.

Daniel Farke’s pre-season preparations for the 24/25 season are well underway, with his squad starting to take real shape.

There are plenty of major changes already to the squad that were beaten in the playoff final, and the leadership of the side has switched now.

Ethan Ampadu named club captain of Leeds United

Tuesday evening brought confirmation that Leeds have named their new club captain for the 24/25 season onwards.

Ethan Ampadu is the new man to don the armband at Leeds, just 12 months on from signing a deal at Elland Road from Chelsea, but clearly cementing himself as a key leader in the dressing room.

Alongside Ampadu leading the group, he has Pascal Struijk and Illan Meslier as his two vice captains to form a ‘leadership group’ in the Whites dressing room.

Liam Cooper’s exit looking certain after captaincy switch

The expiry of Liam Cooper’s contract and the radio silence that has followed in July already indicated that we will be officially bidding farewell to the centre-back.

However, with confirmation of the club shifting the captain’s armband to a new member of the senior squad, it looks as though Cooper is leaving the club for good.

Talks have been reported with Blackburn and Sheffield United over a free transfer for the Scotland international, but the YEP’s Graham Smyth has shared that nothing appears to be imminent currently.

Cooper to bid farewell to Leeds, needs a new opportunity

It’s right that Leeds and Cooper are parting ways this summer, as is expected following Ampadu taking the captaincy.

He wasn’t playing and when he did, he struggled to cope with the high line and defending space in behind.

Moving away to a Blackburn, for example, gives him a much better chance of playing regularly and playing to his strengths too.
