Sam Williams, a defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, suffered a torn ligament in his left knee during Sunday’s special teams drills. He will require surgery, which will end his season. Williams was hurt during a blocking drill when the Cowboys were not yet wearing pads. He was treated for several minutes by trainers and did not put any weight on his leg as he was wheeled off the field in a motorized cart.
The 6-foot-4, 261-pound Williams was anticipated to play a more significant role as an edge rusher this season, particularly with the departures of outside linebacker Dante Fowler and defensive end Dorance Armstrong via free agency.
Williams, a Mississippi native selected in the second round of the 2022 draft, participated in all 17 regular-season games the previous season and has made 32 appearances overall. In his career, he has amassed 8 1/2 sacks.
