Newcastle United have said goodbye to Chris Stygal after the women’s first-team and men’s academy goalkeeping coach decided to pursue a new opportunity
Chris Stygal has announced he has left Newcastle United to pursue a ‘new exciting opportunity’.
Stygal served as the women’s first-team goalkeeping coach during his three years at the club and, more recently, also worked with some of the shot-stoppers in the men’s academy in the under-nine – under 14 age groups.
It was a memorable period to say the least. Having joined Newcastle in the final full season of the Ashley era, when the women’s side were not even a full-time outfit, Stygal played his part behind the scenes as Becky Langley’s team went on to win back-to-back promotions to the Championship.
Seeing so many players flourish as full-time professionals understandably filled Stygal with ‘enormous pride’ and the goalkeeping coach has vowed to continue supporting the club from afar after moving on.
“Today my tenure at Newcastle United Football Club ends as I have decided to pursue a new, exciting opportunity for the upcoming season,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “To be a part of the women’s transition to full-time and see players fulfil dreams of being professional footballers fills me with enormous pride.
“Two promotions, back to back & crowds of nearly 30k at St James Park will live long in the memory. I will always be looking out for the results and supporting from afar.
“I have learnt an enormous amount from my time with the women’s team and men’s academy. I’m looking forward to implementing the knowledge & skills learnt in a new environment. A massive thank you to all the staff, players & fans who collectively have shown what it means to represent this fantastic club.”
