In order to help Steve Thompson, the temporary manager at Latics, Neil Redfearn has returned.
Thompson will collaborate with Redfearn while serving as interim manager of the first team.
Redfearn, who is known for the most iconic moment in Latics history, has coached at a number of clubs, including Leeds United, where he rose from managing the U18 squad to the first team, Rotherham, York, and Newcastle U23s.
While the hiring procedure for a permanent position is ongoing, Paul Murray and Steve Collis will also continue to be a part of the coaching staff.
I’m really happy to have Neil on board; he’s a great coach and someone I’ve known and trusted my entire career, said Thompson.
“Redders and I both progressed through the ranks at Bolton together; we were both apprentices when we made our debuts, so I’ve known him for a while.
He was already highly regarded at Oldham, and as a coach, he is valuable to the team and to me.
We maintained in touch while we were manager and assistant at Leeds.
“I’m happy to have him alongside Paul Murray and Steve Collis because he knows how to get the best out of players,” said the coach.
Between 1989 and 1991, Redfearn spent two years at Boundary Park, the most notable of which arguably occurred when he converted the go-ahead penalty against Sheffield Wednesday to help Joe Royle’s team win the Second Division.
His most notable club, Barnsley, where he made over 300 appearances, was one of the others for which he later played.
In addition to coaching women’s soccer, he retired as a player after more than 1,000 games and went on to work for a number of clubs, including York, Leeds, Rotherham, and Newcastle United U23s.
