Liam Cooper seemingly left Leeds United this summer but there is yet to be an official announcement from the club on the matter, and he’s now agreed a deal with CSKA Sofia.

When Leeds’ retained list was confirmed back in June, there were a fair few players who looked like needing to source a new opportunity elsewhere.

Liam Cooper, though, was named in talks with the club, but has been without a club since his contract expired – with the transfer window now shutting and seasons well underway across Europe.

Liam Cooper agrees CSKA Sofia deal, medical booked

All that has been waiting for Leeds to announce Cooper’s official exit from the club is him signing for a new club – a player who deserves a fitting send-off after nigh on 10 years at Elland Road, the majority of that as club captain too.

However, that confirmation looks to be imminent with reports from Bulgarian journalist Metodi Shumanov that a deal is agreed with CSKA Sofia, with Cooper due to fly to Bulgaria to complete a medical:

Cooper amassed an impressive 284 appearances in a Leeds shirt since joining in the summer of 2014 from Chesterfield.

An interesting career switch for Cooper, but likely a worthwhile one

Cooper needed to leave Leeds in the summer, especially with Max Wöber coming back into the mix, and a move to Europe makes sense.

He’s going to be playing a lot and surely earning a good enough wage to be worth his while heading out of the UK.

It did surprise me that no club in the UK were able to reach an agreement on him, given that he’s more than good enough at Championship level still.
