Coming off a crushing upset defeat to the Atlanta Falcons, the Philadelphia Eagles had a lot to prove against the New Orleans Saints. The Eagles had two main worries after their previous game: one was their defense, the other was their play calling. Going into Week 3, the Eagles were surrendering the most yards per carry of any team in the league (7.8), which was a major issue given that they were slated to face one of the league’s greatest backs, Alvin Kamara.
The Saints were also the top offensive heading into the contest, averaging 45.5 points per game over the first two weeks. However, their defense would prove to be their strong point, holding.
Despite the win, play calling remained a major issue for Philadelphia. Not only were several of their early play calls and designs poor, but head coach Nick Sirianni’s decision to go for it on fourth down three times in the game proved costly. The Eagles needed to win with less than two minutes remaining, down 12-7. If Sirianni had kicked the two simple field goals, Philadelphia would not have been in that situation to begin with. Many Eagles supporters have questioned whether he should be fired because it was really painful to watch.
Though the season is only three weeks old, these decisions followed a similar squandered opportunity against Atlanta, which ultimately cost them the game. Because of this trend of poor decision-making, many fans have made up their minds about Twitter or “X”.
