Emma Raducanu will not compete in Beijing this week following an update on her most recent injury setback.
Emma Raducanu’s injury struggles persist, as evidenced by her most recent fitness update. The 21-year-old retired from her Korea Open quarter-final match against Daria Kasatkina over the weekend due to a foot injury, which has caused her to withdraw from this week’s China Open.
Raducanu was named to the Beijing WTA 1000 draw on Monday after withdrawing from the Seoul tournament, however she withdrew shortly thereafter. The world number 54 was scheduled to face a qualifier in the first round of the China Open, with Hubei-born Zheng Qinwen potentially taking her on.
Raducanu has issued a brief update on the nature of her injuries but has not confirmed how long she will be sidelined.
“I sprained some ligaments in my foot, which will require additional time to heal. It means I won’t be able to compete in Beijing, but I’m hoping to return as soon as possible,” she told X.
Raducanu began her run at the Korea Open with straight-set victories against Peyton Stearns and Yue Yuan, hoping to rebound from another poor return to the US Open. Since winning the title in 2021, the Briton has struggled at Flushing Meadows.
Her title defense in 2022 was stopped in the first round by Alizé Cornet, and after missing the most of the WTA Tour events in 2023 due to injury and surgery recuperation, Raducanu was eliminated in the first round once more by home star Sofia Kenin.
