Robbie Mustoe believes Harry Kane should have been more patient and stayed at Tottenham in order to make a move as a free agent next summer.
Kane arrived in Germany this afternoon to undergo a medical with the record German champions.
Despite its pedigree in the Bundesliga and beyond, Mustoe believes spending at least a year under Spurs’ new coach Ange Postecoglou would have been wise.
‘No,’ Mustoe answered when quizzed as to whether he felt it was the right move on NBC.
‘Obviously it’s his decision and of course he does what he wants to do for himself and his family… I just expected him to hang on one more season.
Check out the project under Postecoglou right now, but knowing that in 12 months he’s gonna be a free agent, he can go to any club both at home or abroad, opportunities would have opened up, I’m sure he would have got the money that he needs being a free transfer.
‘I’m sure he would have gone to a club that can give him those trophies that of course he so desires, but also to be the record goal scorer in the Premier League… But listen he’s done it, it’s a massive club and I get it.’
Mustoe’s fellow NBC Sports pundits did not necessarily concur with the former Middlesbrough man.
‘Is it the right decision? Yes,’ Robbie Earle said. ‘He’s going to one of the biggest clubs in Europe where he can win titles, he can challenge for Champions Leagues and he can still score goals in a way that, he might not get the Premier League record now, but he will get silverware which is something everybody’s held against him.
Former Everton and USMNT star goalkeeper Tim Howard agreed with Earle’s take, suggesting Kane is assured of elusive silverware.
‘When you are the caliber of player he is, a world-renowned striker for England, for Tottenham in the Premier League, I think you have to go and win trophies,’ he said.
‘And by the way, he’s going to one of the best clubs in the world. So for me, I absolutely would have gone.’
