Alexander Isak is expected to be sidelined for some time, leaving Newcastle manager Eddie Howe with limited viable choices at striker.

Due to damage to the pitch at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, the third-round match between Wimbledon and the 21-year-old summer signing Will Osula has been moved to St James’ Park. Osula has just played seven minutes and Callum Wilson is still out.

Gordon might start in the front, as he did in the team’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, but Howe doesn’t think that’s a long-term option.

“I’d probably still say that his best position is as a left-winger right now, but he can and does play different roles,” the man remarked.

“Among them is number nine, which he can play incredibly well.

However, it’s not the same for him. He is a fantastic winger, in my opinion. You have to be cautious before making too many changes to his one-versus-one playmaking or wide area decision-making because, in my opinion, they are among the best in the Premier League.”
