Leeds United look set to retain Wilfried Gnonto in January with any exit now fully “off the cards”, according to TEAMtalk.

The online outlet reported on 8 October that while Everton are intent on signing a right-winger in the upcoming transfer window, they have turned their attention away from Gnonto.

Gnonto has been a long-term target for Everton for the past couple of years, but after signing a new contract at Elland Road, that’s where he looks set to stay.

Wilfried Gnonto to become main man at Leeds United

Gnonto being linked with a move to Everton is certainly nothing new and doesn’t look like ending for as long as the Whites play their football in the Championship.

However, the Italian is set to play a key role in changing that for Daniel Farke’s side, having emerged as their talisman and best player in the wake of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter’s departures.

The 20-year-old, used almost exclusively on the right wing in tandem with Daniel James last season, has played off both flanks as well as in attacking midfield across the first nine matches of the new campaign.

With two goals and four assists already, there is no question over Gnonto’s importance in Farke’s starting XI, despite still having plenty of competition in the form of James, Manor Solomon and Largie Ramazani.

Signing a new contract until 2028 which doesn’t include the exit clauses which led to Rutter’s late transfer [Graham Smyth, 31 August], Gnonto isn’t going anywhere any time soon, and that’s a relief for all involved at Leeds.
