Steve Thompson still aspires to lead Oldham Athletic in the right direction.

But he believes it would be in everyone’s best interests for a decision to be made as soon as possible regarding filling the open managerial position at Boundary Park.

With a six-game unbeaten streak, Thompson, who has hired Latics great Neil Redfearn as his interim assistant, has turned the squad from one of the poorest to one of the best in the National League, earning 12 out of a possible 18 points.

But three weeks have passed since the club parted ways with David Unsworth, and caretaker Thompson believes it is imperative that they immediately put in place a real plan to assist them advance.

When asked if there had been any indication of who the potential new manager would be or when a decision might be made, he responded to The Oldham Times, “I’ve not heard anything at the moment.”

We’ll probably find out early next week, in my opinion.

“It absolutely needs to be fixed. The guys need to know, in my opinion.

“Me and Redders will give it our best shot until we know different, but I think for everybody it needs to be sorted once and for all.”

After a 2-1 victory against Kidderminster, Shaw-born Thompson declared his intention to take over as manager of his boyhood team, Oldham Athletic. Latics had won three straight matches at the time, but since then, despite taking the lead in all of them, they have drawn the following three. Thompson, however, is adamant that his stance has not altered. When asked if he still want the position full-time, he replied, “Absolutely.

“We’ve inspired this bunch, and we’ve gone six games without losing, but there is still much more to be done.

“We are aware of the course we intend to take and the team’s demands for expansion. Although it’s a beautiful club and a great location to be, much work still has to be done.

Thompson, however, says that he is unfazed by it.

“To take this club forward, me and Redders have sat down, we know what we need, we know what it takes,” he stated.

“We have incredible experience. We collectively turned Leeds around, so it doesn’t bother us.

“We’ve energized this group, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

“They’re reacting to what we’re doing, the players. We had six straight wins.

“However, I believe it ought to be resolved once and for all for everyone. Everyone is interested in the route we’re taking, and whatever happens, it must be right for everyone.
