Although Micky Mellon has identified areas for his Oldham Athletic team to improve, he was happy with a point gained through a comeback in his first game in charge at home.
Latics overcame a halftime deficit to win both of their comebacks against Altrincham. James Norwood first equalised the score, and Nathan Sheron’s incredible second-half goal kept Latics in the lead.
In addition to the game’s character and outcome, which saw Altrincham’s second goal come from a ridiculous penalty call, Mellon took heart from their team’s ability to bounce back from a terrible midweek loss at AFC Fylde.
“We got them in at half-time and just told them to keep going because we hadn’t done a massive amount wrong,” said the newly appointed manager of the Latics.
“There is no doubt that we can improve on a lot of things and that we want to become more proficient in all areas, but I believe that we performed well enough to be in the game. In my opinion, we were the superior team during the game.
“We persevered and managed to score an incredible equaliser; it’s a fantastic strike.” In the end, I believe we simply ran out of time.
However, overall, it was a stronger and more composed performance. Naturally, we want to improve in everything we do, but the boys deserve a lot of credit for persevering in carrying out our instructions, making an effort to do them well, and working hard even though, in my opinion, they only received the minimal compensation they were due.
“Probably on the balance of the whole game we probably deserved a victory, but it wasn’t to be.”
