Paul Mullin, a striker for Wrexham, says he does not anticipate being called up for Wales.
The forward, who was born in Liverpool and is eligible to play for Wales due to a grandparent, was not playing in the 4-0 friendly victory over Gibraltar on October 11. And Mullin, 28, still aspires to play football internationally. He stated, “I’ll hold out the hope that If I’m playing well enough and I get the chance to do so, I’d be over the moon,” on the podcast produced by Proper Football.
He went on, “I don’t expect to be called up.”
Robert Page, the manager of Wales, stated of Mullin before his team’s easy victory over Gibraltar: “We’ve had a few conversations about Paul, so the next step is he’s now on standby and he’s one step away. We keep an eye on the Welsh players, and Paul is one we’ve definitely noticed—and he deserves it. The next phase of his growth is this.
A major knock on Mullin’s chances of playing for his country abroad has been his departure from Cambridge United two years ago.
Mullin helped Cambridge into League One in the 2020–21 season by setting a League Two record with 32 goals, but he later moved down two divisions to join Wrexham. As an international manager, you’ve got players who are already registered for the country playing at higher levels,” said Mullin. It’s been said that I could have played football at a higher level, but I decided not to, so I can’t really hold it against them for not picking me because I came to play here instead.
However, in my opinion, there shouldn’t be a problem.
One interviewer said, ‘If he scores goals in League Two, then they’d look at calling him up,’ but I hold the League Two record for most goals scored in a season already. For myself, I strive to score as many goals as I can while playing football for Wrexham. If the opportunity came, it would be beyond my wildest dreams for a player at this level to be called up for a national team. Mullin, 28, revealed the serious injuries that prevented him from playing in the first few games of the 2023–24 season. The forward broke multiple ribs and had a punctured lung as a result of
“It’s something you don’t expect or want to happen while you’re abroad,” he stated.
“After ten minutes, the ball gets behind Jonny Evans, and I chased after it. The goalie then emerged, threw a bit of a fit, and cleaned me out rather than the ball. I had trouble breathing for a few minutes after that. As soon as I was on the ground, I truly began to fear the worst. The medical team moved quickly. After I saw faces above me, they informed me that my lips had turned blue.
Based on their expressions, I realised at that very moment that I was in trouble. But thanks to the medical experts we have and those present at the stadium, everything turned out okay. I say alright, I came out with four broken ribs and a punctured lung, but I was alright to tell the story. On September 9, Mullin made his injury comeback as a substitute in Wrexham’s 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers. In his ten League Two games this season, he has netted four goals for Phil Parkinson’s team.
