The Kansas City Chiefs, who lack the offensive ability they’ve shown in previous seasons, find themselves in a relatively unexpected position going into their game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Star tight end Travis Kelce, though, is eager to refute any suggestion that their wide receivers’ shortcomings are to blame for this decline in effectiveness.
During the Chiefs’ arrival in Frankfurt on Friday, Kelce made the following statement: “This team has every piece that it needs to be great.” Anyone can discuss whatever they’d like to talk about. We’re going forward in that direction because I know we have a team that can score points and that our coaches can put us in excellent positions to succeed. All we need is for the guys to lock in and be prepared for those crucial times when we need them most.
Through their first eight games of the season, the Chiefs are 6-2 but are averaging about seven fewer points per game than they did the previous year. The Chiefs were held without a score in their most recent game against the Denver Broncos for the third time since starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes took over in 2018.
Wide receivers for Kansas City have come under fire for their underwhelming output. Interestingly, the Chiefs have the most dropped passes in the NFL (19 of which are attributable to their wide receivers). Against the Broncos, these drops proved costly at crucial times, such as when Skyy Moore missed a catch in the end zone in the fourth quarter.
“If you watch that game, you’ll notice that there are a lot of turnovers and that the winning percentage isn’t particularly high when you turn the ball over,” Kelce said. The Chiefs mishandled the ball five times. The ability to control such turnovers and dropped passes is therefore crucial to our success. A few assignments have been missed, and I accept responsibility for it all. I believe that this week, every offensive player in that locker room has adopted the same mindset.
After the Dolphins came earlier in the week, the Chiefs landed in Germany later. Even so, Kelce stated, “I’ll be the one to say that we got a team that we’re ready to roll. There’s been a lot of talk about us coming out here later and maybe not having that time to acclimatise and everything.” Kelce was optimistic about his team’s capacity to resolve their problems. We don’t care if it’s in a parking lot, on lovely grass, in a mud field, or somewhere else entirely. We are mentally prepared to rock and roll, so to speak.
Kelce acknowledged that he performs better at Chiefs games when pop phenomenon Taylor Swift is around. He averages nine catches for 108 yards while she’s there, but only five catches for 50 yards when she’s not. He played down the relationship, referring to it as a “bit of a coincidence,” and he wouldn’t say if she will be in Frankfurt on Sunday. “I’m just going to keep it to myself because I don’t want to mess with any of that stuff,” he said in a lighthearted manner.
