On Wednesday, Netflix formally revealed an SEC docuseries that will premiere next summer and provide viewers with a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at a number of shows throughout the 2024 season. But the Alabama Crimson Tide and Kalen DeBoer won’t be on the show.
Alabama was one of six universities that did not appear in the Netflix documentary, along with Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and Texas, according to Seth Emerson of The Athletic. The other ten schools will be highlighted in a manner reminiscent of Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive to Survive series, which has received praise from critics recently.
Fans of Alabama are somewhat disappointed by this news because this was the first season that DeBoer succeeded legendary head coach Nick Saban, and it would have been interesting to watch how he handled the pressure of taking over from perhaps the greatest head coach in the history of the sport. We may have also seen offseason footage of DeBoer settling into Tuscaloosa and getting to know his players before the new season began.
The season itself would’ve been a rollercoaster ride as we would’ve seen the team go from the high of beating Georgia in September to the low of losing at Vanderbilt the following week. These ups-and-downs for the team most likely would’ve been the main ongoing storylines through the entire series and it would’ve culminated with their reactions to being left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff.
On the player front, one could easily envision Ryan Williams being one of the biggest stars of the series as we followed him navigating the unique position of being a 17-year-old All-American. Jalen Milroe probably would’ve been a central figure of the show as well as he led the team in what will most likely be his final season in Tuscaloosa.
However, a Netflix special on the Crimson Tide was not in the cards. It makes natural that teams like Alabama, Georgia, and Texas would refuse to have outside cameras in their locker rooms all the time given the stressful circumstances that some of these schools are in. The other ten colleges that are featured on the broadcast should still provide us with some quality content.
