Following their Champions League match on October 25 against Atletico Madrid, Celtic was fined by UEFA.
In their first three group matches, Celtic has been charged by UEFA three times.
The £25,000 in fines was levied for various offences, the most notable of which was a £15,000 fine for sending out a “provocative message of an offensive nature.”
The other two infractions from the game were for “lighting fireworks” (£3,000) and “blocking of public passageways” (£6,900). [Scottish Football]
In addition, Atletico Madrid was given a warning for their inappropriate behaviour and fined for setting off fireworks.
Because the match did not appear on UEFA’s regular platforms where committee meeting minutes are published, we reported yesterday that Celtic had not received any fines from the match. However, on Wednesday, Celtic was notified of the fines.
The bigger fine imposed on Celtic may have something to do with the thousands of supporters who flew Palestinian flags at Celtic Park before kickoff. This action took place in the midst of the ongoing Gaza Strip conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East. The display went forward in spite of the club’s request that supporters not bring any flags or banners associated with the dispute.
Celtic has prohibited the fan group “Green Brigade” from entering the stadium due to these and other behavioural concerns.
