Now, Derek Ferguson has emphasized that a certain Rangers player shouldn’t be given a new deal extension.
Borna Barisic, a left-back who joined the Ibrox team in 2018 after leaving Osijek for £2.2 million, is the man in question.
Since then, Barisic has been a fantastic asset to Rangers, appearing in 223 games and helping to create a staggering 52 goals with his accurate crossing.
Although there have always been skeptics about the 31-year-old, many believe that now, with his contract expiring at the end of the current campaign, would be the ideal time for him and the team to sever ways.
Ferguson shares a similar perspective and stated to the panel on the Open Goal podcast that he would not think that Barisic would stay with the Gers if he could decide his destiny.
Derek Ferguson opposes Borna Barisic signing a new contract with the Rangers.
Initially, Ferguson spoke his mind about Ridvan Yilmaz, claiming that since Besiktas signed him for £5 million in 2022, he hasn’t at all convinced him.
Ferguson did not hesitate to select the more seasoned Croatian player, Barisic, over Ridvan for the starting position in this Sunday’s Viaplay Cup Final over Aberdeen.
Ferguson, on the other hand, isn’t the biggest admirer of Barisic and will be glad to see him go at the end of the 2023–24 season.
“It’s a difficult one for Barisic because he’s out of contract as well,” stated Ferguson. Barisic engages in self-play.
The former Gers star was then questioned by host Simon Ferry about offering Barisic a new contract, to which he said, “No chance.” Rangers have an issue there (at left-back). They must figure it out before adding players in January. I don’t think Barisic or Ridvan are good enough.
