Spurs are also rumored to be interested in Crystal Palace and England center-back Marc Guehi, for whom Newcastle United has apparently made an inquiry.
The Sun claims that Newcastle has contacted Crystal Palace on a potential January transfer for Marc Guehi. However, they are not the only team keeping an eye on the England defender; Tottenham Hotspur is also reportedly keeping tabs on the situation.
Despite his high price tag, the 23-year-old is considered one of the greatest and most reliable defenders in the Premier League. He joined Palace in 2021 for a reported £20 million. Therefore, it’s said that the Eagles are determined not to lose him in the middle of the season and that they won’t change their position next month until the asking price is too good to refuse.
Nevertheless, it’s alleged Newcastle has already officially contacted Guehi about a potential signing in an attempt to get ahead of their competition, since some of the Premier League’s biggest names are all in the market for new defenders.
Although the Magpies were among the strongest defensive teams the previous season, they have so far been weak at the back, in part because of injuries to some of its main players. Sven Botman is already their primary left-footed center-back. Though perhaps not with the same agility as the Dutchman, they have been considering adding a backup defender for the long run.
Guehi is a left-footer, but his mobility makes him a great addition for them. With players like Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, and Dan Burn nearing retirement, the Toon will gain in Guehi not only a skilled young partner for Botman but also a backup left-back should the need arise.
Newcastle will not be able to spend much on numerous permanent acquisitions in the January transfer window to reinforce the injury-riddled squad and help them have a successful second half of the campaign, though, since they are running very close to their Financial Fair Play quota. This rules out any move for Guehi.
Similarly, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is undoubtedly in the mood to reinforce the back line due to a severe injury issue and a defense that has battled to be consistent this season. Guehi would be a perfect pick for him to pursue.
Tottenham have been looking into signing a new centre-back over the past few months, with interest shown in other Premier League profiles like Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly; however, their interest in both players has since cooled.
Clearly, the ideal centre-back profile would be a young and Premier League-proven player, and Guehi would be a perfect fit, having made 88 league appearances for Palace and even a handful of appearances for England.
Having said that, Tottenham will have their work cut out for them in trying to acquire Guehi’s signature, with a hefty price tag and limited finances after struggling to sell players in the past summer.
