One of Georgia football’s greatest players is leaving the team. It is official that Brock Bowers will be joining the NFL. That news probably didn’t surprise anyone, but it’s still bittersweet.
One of the best players to don the red and black is definitely Brock Bowers. Yes, I am aware of Herschel, but did he ever capture two titles in a row? Not at all! So my number one is Brock Bowers.
I must admit that I have a bias because I was a student during Brock Bowers’ playing career and was able to watch practically every game he participated in. Congrats, then, to the fortunate handful who got to see Herschel and Bowers. I’ll tell my children that I attended school with the all-time greatest Georgia football player.
There have been so many guys leaving for the NFL that I haven’t written about them all. However, because the others are not Brock Bowers, I haven’t written about them either. While Sedrick Van Pran is undoubtedly one of the best lineman and leaders in Georgia football history, none compare to Brock. Ladd McConkey was amazing.
Early in September, I was on the phone catching up with an old friend when we talked about Georgia football. As a devoted follower of USC, my friend was curious about what it was like to have a generational player and win national titles alongside them.
Before long, I was discussing the things that Bowers does and his demeanor both on and off the field. It was soon pointed out that I talked about the greatness of Brock Bowers for 25 minutes uninterrupted. I was embarrassed because I was fanboying over someone four years my junior. But, really, how much of a crime is it when you are talking about Bowers?
Bowers’s recruitment flew under the radar for most fans. Most of us heard his name and Napa, California, and did not pay that much attention. But then that famed video came out of him running up that hill, and people started talking.
A few months later, everyone discussed this tight-end Brock Bowers in summer and fall practice. Little did we know that he would start in that massive match-up against Clemson in Charlotte, and the rest was history.
From the long touchdown run against UAB in week 2 of the 2021 season to the end-around touchdown run against Vandy and then the touchdown run against Tech. In just one season, Bowers put on highlight reel-worthy plays every game.
Bowers will always be the guy who scored the touchdown to put the Dawgs up for good against Alabama in the 2022 CFP Championship game. One of the loudest pops I heard inside a stadium until the Ringo interception. If you do not believe how loud it was inside Lucas Oil Stadium on that Bowers run, watch the replay of it; even the camera shook. Unbelievable.
All of this is to say Brock Bowers is on the Mount Rushmore of Georgia Football. Not only for his play but for how he played the game and represented Georgia football off the field. A DAMN GOOD DAWG.
