Nottingham Forest will be gearing up for a big few weeks once they return from their winter break.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Reds have a blank weekend this week but will then return to action in earnest. They now have an FA Cup replay with Blackpool to fit in, and they will be aiming to push up the table when they resume their Premier League campaign.

And with the January transfer window now open, there was plenty to talk about when Forest reporter Sarah Clapson held a live Q&A on our Reds Facebook page. Below is a look at how it panned out.

Q: Are we light or used to having a bloated squad, even the top sides are putting youngsters on the bench, we have FA Youth Cup finalists from two years ago, some of these should be doing the same.

A:Forest have such a great history and tradition of bringing youngsters through the ranks. But it has become harder for young players to get a breakthrough since the step up to the Premier League.

Nuno’s options were a bit limited on Sunday, due to injury and players being on AFCON duty, so he did include some youngsters on the bench in the FA Cup. It’s a shame none of them got on, but perhaps the circumstances of the game affected their chances of featuring.

It seems unlikely he will get many minutes in the Premier League between now and the end of the season, so it would probably be best for his development to get some game time elsewhere. When Steve Cooper was at the club, he was really keen to keep an eye on Aguilera at close quarters for the first half of the season; see how he did and then make a decision in January. I suspect the situation hasn’t changed under Nuno.

It will be the same for the likes of George Shelvey, who said back in the summer that he was keen to go on loan to get minutes. Perhaps for Andrew Omobamidele and some of the players in the youth set-up, too. And for Alex Mighten, who is back at the club after his loan spell in Belgium was cut short – the next move for him is going to be crucial.

Everyone wants to see young players coming through, but the Premier League brings so many pressures in terms of getting results that it becomes more difficult for that to happen. It’s finding the right time. Maybe the FA Cup replay will provide another opportunity.

Obviously, we know Steve Cooper was very keen on working with younger players and they were involved a lot in training. We’re yet to really see how Nuno operates in that sense.

In terms of being light or having a bloated squad, it is a bit of both. Forest are light in certain areas at the moment, such as centre-back, due to injuries and absences. But there is no question numbers need trimming. Some players are seeing barely any game time, and it can be tough for the head coach to keep everyone happy when that is the case.

Q: Vlachodimos dived so early for the second goal against Blackpool for no reason?

A: I’m a bit in two minds about Vlachodimos on Sunday. I think he could have done better for both goals, but he also wasn’t helped by his defence.

Gonzalo Montiel had been brilliant in the previous two games, but he had a bit of a stinker early on against Blackpool – although he did make up for it a bit by setting up Dominguez.

The most frustrating thing where Vlachodimos is concerned is that he came in with such a good CV and so much experience. He seemed like a quality goalkeeper. But Forest just haven’t seen that. He’s clearly a good keeper, but he hasn’t performed to those kinds of levels yet.

When he’s played, the goals conceded haven’t necessarily been his fault – again, he hasn’t been helped by the defending at times. But he also hasn’t pulled off too many big saves.

Matt Turner, on the other hand, has made some really good stops. It is just when he has the ball at his feet that he looks vulnerable. Perhaps the way around that is for Forest to try to not put him in that situation.

At the minute, I think Turner just edges ahead of Vlachodimos. But neither have been particularly convincing.

I’m not sure bringing in another keeper should be the answer, though. Forest brought Turner and Vlachodimos in on permanent deals in the summer. And with other areas in need of strengthening, it would make more sense to spend money elsewhere.

Whatever happens, Forest need to settle on a No.1. It is such an important position, and one where consistency and stability is needed.

Q: Any reason why Mangala hasn’t featured for the new gaffer?

A: You always find that certain players suit certain managers. Players who had been doing well under one manager can suddenly find themselves out of favour under another – that is the case at any club.

At the minute, Nuno – for whatever reason – is favouring others ahead of Mangala. I think it is just down to selection decisions.

Nuno obviously has his own way of playing and his own ideas for how things should go. As with every manager, he will decide who he thinks is best suited with that and who is right for certain games.

Sunday aside, you can’t really argue with the results so far. It is difficult to change a winning team too much, and those who played against Newcastle and Manchester United did well.

Maybe Nuno wants to have a look at certain players first. He is still assessing the squad and getting to know the group.

After Sunday, though, Mangala must be wondering what he has to do to get a look-in. It was a bit surprising he didn’t at least come off the bench.

The Ryan Yates-Danilo midfield partnership wasn’t particularly convincing. For all his talent, Danilo has yet to really get going this season. It looked like the performance against Manchester United could be the spark for him, but then he wasn’t at his best against Blackpool.

Maybe that will mean Mangala is an option for the replay. Hopefully he gets a chance soon. He has to be up there with one of Forest’s best performers of the season so far, and he has come on leaps and bounds in the last 12 months.

Q: Is there truth in this FFP talk or hyped up? Could we seriously be deducted points after what we have gone through to come up with no squad?

A:It is a case of having to wait and see at the moment. Clubs should find out next week whether they are charged with breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules.

Under new fast-track measures, top-flight clubs had to submit their 2022/23 accounts by December 31 and any charges will be announced by January 14. It is difficult to even attempt to predict what might happen.

As Kieran Maguire, who is an expert in football finances, said when he was asked by The Times which clubs might be at risk, there has been a sense for a while that Forest might be close. That doesn’t necessarily mean they have breached the rules, though.

A lot centres around the sale of Brennan Johnson. There is a wider debate to be had about the merits of FFP, and in that sense surely it is wrong that clubs like Forest are almost encouraged to sell their top young talents to stay within the rules?

But with the system as it is, it certainly made more sense for Forest to try to get as much money for Johnson as they could. The club’s argument is that they could have sold Johnson earlier in the window, but it would have been for a lower fee. By waiting until deadline day, they got £47.5 million for him. The issue is that the sale happened outside the allotted time period that is assessed, up to June 30.

Q: When can we expect Taiwo back?

A: Hopefully fairly soon. He’s making really good progress and the feeling is he could be back sooner than originally anticipated. It was initially expected he would be out for about three months, but with a bit of luck it won’t be that long.

Forest will tread very carefully with him, though. He had been affected by groin issues before and it was hoped having surgery would be a long-term solution, but the club will not want to risk him having any setbacks.
