Two-time Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins got in touch with Ryan Reynolds and sent a timely message after Welcome to Wrexham was recognised with an Emmy Award

Welsh recognition doesn’t get a lot more prestigious than Anthony Hopkins.

Arguably the nation’s greatest acting export of all time, the two-time Oscar-winner honoured Ryan Reynolds for his recent work on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. The FX show – which was made with help from Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney – was rewarded with an Emmy win this week, and Hopkins showed his delight for the duo on social media.

It comes after the man behind Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Pope Benedict XVI and Methuselah, to name a few of his roles, paid homage to his fellow actor last year. Hopkins, 86, was one of numerous Hollywood figures to congratulate Reynolds, 47, and McElhenney, 46, after Wrexham won promotion to League Two – though his praise was more meaningful than most.

“You’re now an honorary Welsh boyo,” wrote Hopkins in a tweet to the Wrexham co-owner back in April 2023. And that may have well meant a lot to the Canadian, judging by how invested he’s become in the north Wales town.

And Thespian Hopkins got in touch again with another Welsh-themed message to the Wrexham figurehead following the club’s Emmy honour. This time, the Port Talbot native echoed Reynolds’ own words back to him after Deadpool appeared on screen to accept the award.

‘The Merc With a Mouth’ was on hand to pick up the Emmy on behalf of Reynolds and McElhenney. And true to Reynolds form, the Marvel assassin killed his crowd with laughter after commenting: “Cymru am byth, b*****s.”

Although he overlooked the expletives, Hopkins repeated the Welsh phrase back to Reynolds and wrote “Cymru am byth, Mr. Lively,” referring to Reynolds’ partner, Blake Lively. The saying translates to “Wales forever” and is a common rallying cry for Welsh football fans following the national team.

It’s fair to say Hopkins read the room right once again and, true to form, delivered his message without any waste of words. Reynolds showed his love by sharing the message on his account, hopeful another promotion post from the acting icon awaits later this season.
