Former Wrexham winger Carlos Edwards has revealed he was invited to Wrexham AFC’s first game of this campaign, which ended in a 5-3 defeat to MK Dons.
The 45-year-old had a very long and quite successful football career, which saw him play for the likes of Wrexham, Luton Town, Sunderland, Wolves, and Ipswich Town.
The Red Dragons were Edwards’ first club in England, as he joined them in 2000 from Defence Force, a side from Trinidad and Tobago.
Edwards played 128 games for the Welsh club, during which time he scored 16 goals and chipped in with five assists.
Wrexham were lowly in the EFL at the time Edwards arrived, but in his final season at the club, they found themselves in League One.
However, nearly 20 years on, Wrexham are now back in the Football League and have taken to life very well as they bid to earn back-to-back promotions.
Carlos Edwards: Wrexham return was special
Wrexham didn’t make the best of starts when they returned to the Football League, as they hosted MK Dons and were beaten 5-3 in what was a thrilling contest.
Former Wrexham player Carlos Edwards has now revealed he was invited to the Racecourse Ground for that game, the first time he had been back in 10 years.
Edwards said: “I was invited for the first game of this season. I went up, it wasn’t the best game of games as they lost 5-3. I mean, if you enjoy goals, I think they lost 5-3 to MK Dons.
“That was the first time I’d been back in over 10 years. Because of the time, with the kids and the wife, doing what I do, I haven’t had the time to travel all that way because I’m still based in Ipswich, so it’s a bit of a trek and hard to find the time to go.
“Going back, it was obviously something special. I haven’t seen the fans for so long, but they still love me up there, I still have fond memories and still have friends up there, so I met up with them.
“I took the family with me; they’ve never had the chance to see Wrexham, so that was something special.
“You’re just looking at the club now and there is this big buzz back. They’re playing some good football and doing well in the league, so long may it continue because they suffered too long.”
Wrexham took the National League by storm last season, so while they deserved their place in League Two, there were many wondering how they would cope back in the Football League.
The Red Dragons have taken to the league with no problem, as they look just as comfortable as they did in England’s fifth division.
It was an up-and-down start to the season, but now, after 25 games, Wrexham look very much at home and look like a side that could easily seal another automatic promotion.
The Welsh side are currently occupying third place, having won 14 of their 25 games, which has helped them get to 49 points.
They have a one-point lead over AFC Barrow in fourth and a 10-point lead over eighth-place MK Dons.
Wrexham have probably surprised themselves with how well they have done in the fourth tier this season.
The Welsh side will probably have deep down, wanted to just make sure they consolidate their place in the division while also continuing to progress.
However, they have done more than that and now look like one of, if not the best side in the entire league. Wrexham will fear no one in this league, and they shouldn’t, as the options they have in their squad could be argued to be better than some League One teams have.
Not only can they secure promotion this season, but Wrexham can easily become a Championship side in a couple of years.
