Transfer relief for Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney as deadline passes at Wrexham

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Gunners had the option of recalling the 22-year-old goalkeeper in the winter transfer window, but had to trigger that clause by the close of play on January 21. It appears the Premier League outfit are happy for Okonkwo to see out the season in North Wales.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID ABOUT OKONKWO

That is music to the ears of Red Dragons boss Parkinson, who has said of seeing his first-choice shot-stopper stay put: “It’s a massive signing for us to keep Arthur, he’s been exceptional for us. He’s a great lad and has bought in to everything the club is about. He’s moved up here and he’s been great to have around, but not just that, he’s a terrific goalkeeper. When someone plays well you always worry that they’ve caught the eye of other teams. So yes, I was pleased when the clock struck 12 after the 21st.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Okonwko has seen his stock soar at Wrexham, leading to suggestions that he could attract transfer interest from elsewhere. Arsenal are keeping a close eye on his development, with Parkinson adding: “They’ve been brilliant with us. They’re very interested in Arthur’s progress, and they know we’re looking after him well. This is a great stage for Arthur to play on, with the expectancy of everything here at Wrexham, playing in front of packed houses every week. They understand this is a great place for him to be.”

WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM?

Wrexham fans have called for a permanent option on Okonkwo to be explored, with it possible that Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could make the funds available that allow a deal to be done – particularly if the club secure promotion into League One this season.
