West Ham showed keen interest in signing Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn at the start of the January transfer window but the interest in him appeared to have cooled down.

However, according to PA, via the Guardian (live blog), the Hammers could look to sign the 26-year-old winger before the deadline day.

West Ham are looking to add new players to their ranks this month and could look to move for Bergwijn but they need to sell Said Benrahma first. Benrahma has been linked with a move to French club Olympique Marseille, but a loan bid was rejected.

The Hammers are short of options in their attacking front following injuries to Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta. They are close to signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on loan but need a few more signings before the deadline on 1 February.

Need good offer

The Telegraph reported earlier this month that the Hammers earmarked Sunderland winger Jack Clarke and Ajax’s Bergwijn as potential options and they were weighing up bids for both players.

However, that didn’t happen. Bergwijn spent two years at Tottenham, but he proved to be a flop at the north London club. He then joined Ajax for a club-record fee of £26 million in the summer of 2022, and has been a great hit for them.

Bergwijn – who can play in all three positions up front – has managed seven goals and four assists in the Eredivisie this season. he has also scored one goal in the Europa League.

West Ham are also showing keen interest in signing Portuguese winger Jota who is desperate to leave the club. They have been linked with a move for Newcastle striker Callum Wilson as well.

Bergwijn would be a fantastic signing for the Hammers, but unless they offload Benrahma, that looks unlikely. The situation could change drastically in the next few days.
