David Moyes made it quite evident today that he is aware that he will have to battle it out for a new contract with West Ham United. Following West Ham’s 6-0 home loss to Arsenal last weekend, David Moyes, the manager of the team, is reportedly under extreme pressure at the moment, and the board is not impressed.
We have gone seven weeks without a win as a result of the terrible form the Hammers are currently experiencing. It’s unfortunate that we’ve regressed so much, particularly in light of our solid position at the end of December.
The pressure is now firmly on Moyes to turn things around and have us playing at a high level once more, and I think that one particular selection he chose for our match against Nottingham Forest tonight indicates that he is aware that his chances of signing a new contract are quite slim.
The strongest hint yet that David Moyes is battling for a new contract
Needless to say, Tomas Soucek is one of Moyes’s favourite players. Despite the 28-year-old’s bad form, the Scot starts him every week—that is, until today!
If Moyes knew he was going to have a new contract at the conclusion of the season, there is no way in the world, at least not in my opinion, that he would let go of the huge Czech international. Moyes made this afternoon’s team decision purely to demonstrate to the owners that he can line up more offensively.
It’s long overdue for Soucek to be removed from the starting lineup; he had no business being in the starting lineup at all. Never before have I seen a Premier League midfielder act so uneasy when the ball is at his feet. He may be excellent in the air, particularly when defending set pieces, but that is all he has to give.
The former Slavia Prague player hinders our transition speed so much that it is nearly hard for us to play direct, counterattacking football. Unfortunately, Moyes is simply fixated on the aerial defensive solidarity that Soucek provides. If the 28-year-old had previously committed to a new, long-term deal, I have no doubt that he would have started today’s match against Nottingham Forest.
