Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson got caught off-guard when he found out who Wolves have brought in as manager following the departure of Julian Lopetegui.

Callum Wilson has said that he uses his summer break to switch off completely from football, and it seems like he’s yet to fully switch back on as Gary O’Neil’s appointment at Wolves completely passed him by and shocked him when it was mentioned on The Footballer’s Football Podcast.

Gary O’Neil was an outside choice for Manager Of The Season last year after guiding Bournemouth to safety after taking over from Scott Parker.

Wilson had no idea Gary O’Neil had been installed as Wolves boss

It was O’Neil’s first job in management and he did extremely well, but Bournemouth decided to let him go at the end of the season and brought in Andoni Iraola to replace him.

It was a move that shocked a lot of people as the belief was that O’Neil had done enough to earn the job full time.

During the podcast it was mentioned about O’Neill being in the hotseat at Wolves which came as news to Wilson who said: “Gary O’Neil is the manager of Wolves? Really?! Do you know what, I rate that. I was a former Bournemouth player but I was a bit shocked they got rid of him.”

Newcastle face Wolves in the Premier League in October

Wilson went on to say that he thought O’Neil had done well at Bournemouth and it’s good that another club have given him a chance.

O’Neil has taken the Wolves job after the previous manager Julien Lopetegui left the club my mutual consent after feeling like he wasn’t being backed enough in the transfer market. O’Neil was in place around 24 hours following Lopetegui’s departure.

Newcastle don’t face Wolves until October – I can’t help imagining how funny it would have been if the news managed to elude Wilson until the sides met.
