Coventry City players have to ‘step up’ after Gus Hamer transfer

The latest Coventry City news as midfielder Ben Sheaf gives his reaction to the sale of Gustavo Hamer

Coventry City midfielder Ben Sheaf has said that it is up to every member of the squad to step up following the departure of Gustavo Hamer.

After weeks of speculation over his future, Hamer completed a move to Premier League side Sheffield United on Friday night. He was a key player for Coventry during his time at the club.

But his absence wasn’t felt too strongly on Saturday, with City coming out as 3-0 winners over Middlesbrough less than 24 hours after his departure was confirmed. Goals from Matty Godden, Haji Wright and an own goal gave the Sky Blues their first three points of the season.

The game against Boro saw Josh Eccles move inside to play alongside Sheaf. The midfielder said that the objective is now finding that connection.

“Gus is a top player and a top person. We loved having him around and he did fantastic for us, especially last year,” Sheaf said after the win over Middlesbrough.

“He deserves what he got. It is nice but we have to move on. It is all about finding new partnerships. I really enjoyed playing with Josh (Eccles) and it is about building relationships all over the pitch. The more we play with each other the better we will get!”

The midfielder, who was named as man of the match against Middlesbrough, also said it is about stepping up following the two big departures this summer. He has also set an own personal target.

“It has got to be a collective thing,” he added. “Everyone has got to step up and I’ve got to take on the responsibility a bit as well, score more goals, get some assists.

“I need to keep on doing what I am doing and step up, keep trying to improve.

“Vik (Gyökeres) and Gus were massive parts of our success last season, so it is time for others to take on that responsibility and show what we can do.”

Coventry are back in Championship action on Saturday, when they visit Swansea City (3pm kick-off).
