Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen are closing in on a deal to sign former Wigan Athletic midfielder Jamie McGrath, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
The Republic of Ireland international left the Latics at the expiration of his contract recently but did not feature for them last season. McGrath spent last season on loan in the Scottish top-flight, plying his trade with Dundee United due to Wigan’s dire financial situation. The midfielder scored nine times, but that was not enough to save the side from relegation.
Aberdeen are reportedly close on a deal for McGrath, but they face competition from league rivals Hearts for the midfielder’s signature. Wigan defender Luke Robinson could also be headed north of the border, as St Johnstone manager Steven Maclean claimed the 21-year-old is ‘desperate’ for a move to the Scottish Premiership.
The 26-year-old has spent a considerable amount of time in the Scottish top flight, featuring regularly for St Mirren between 2020 and 2022. His form there saw him earn a move to Wigan Athletic. However, he only featured four times for the Latics before his loan switch to Dundee United, opting to depart the club when his contract expired and has been without a club since. McGrath has not been short of suitors since becoming a free agent, with Hearts said to be keeping tabs on the Irishman, but Aberdeen look set to complete their swoop. It is thought that Aberdeen boss Barry Robson sees McGrath as a suitable replacement for Ylber Ramadani, who joined Italian side Lecce in Serie A this summer.
