Sheffield Wednesday have signed 10 new players this summer; but only one striker in Ashley Fletcher.

Fletcher is yet to get off the mark this season, and he’s yet to start in the Championship, instead being deployed as a late substitute in each of Sheffield Wednesday’s opening three Championship games.

Xisco Munoz has some good strikers at his disposal in names like Josh Windass, Lee Gregory, and Michael Smith, with the latter two having one goal each to their name in the league so far.

We could see the Owls bolster their striking ranks before September 1st though, with one name having been linked; Uche Ikpeazu.

The bustling 28-year-old is without a club after terminating his contract at Turkish side Konyaspor, with reports last week revealing that the Owls were in talks over a potential deal for the former Cardiff City, Middlesbrough, and Wycombe Wanderers man.

But Wycombe are interested in a potential return, and so too are Huddersfield Town and QPR. Former Wycombe boss and current QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth bought Ikpeazu to England in 2020, and he was a huge fan of the striker, previously labelling him as a ‘hardworking’ and ‘humble’ player.

Ikpeazu’s links to Wednesday though have been met with hostility by some fans, who don’t see Ikpeazu as a good potential signing. But whilst he may not be the most technical or prolific striker, he could be just what Wednesday during this tough period.

Wednesday lacked some athleticism and power in their front line going into this season. The arrivals of Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama may help to combat that, but on the very front line, they’re still perhaps lacking a player of Ikpeazu’s ilk.

During his 2020/21 Championship season with Wycombe, he managed to net six goals, doing so in a struggling side that was eventually relegated – he also scored three in 13 on loan at Cardiff City during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

He’s proved that he can score goals in the Championship, so for Wednesday this could be one of the final few pieces of the jigsaw as Munoz looks to get this side up and running in the league.

Sheffield Wednesday return to action away at Cardiff City this weekend.
