Giant defender Aden Flint enjoyed a productive loan spell with the Owls in the second half of last season but is now set to come up against them with Mansfield Town

Aden Flint says he was pleasantly surprised to learn he’d be heading back so soon to Sheffield Wednesday. The giant centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Hillsborough. It was his second temporary spell at the club after an injury-interrupted stint two years prior.

His second spell proved far more successful though, and he made 18 league outings as he helped Wednesday seal a memorable promotion to the Championship.

There was speculation over the summer that the move could be made permanent but he ended up signing terms with League Two side Mansfield instead. Now, he’s set for a quickfire S6 return as the Stags visit tomorrow night in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

“It is a massive week. We have a great game to look forward to at Hillsborough,” said the 34-year-old.

“I didn’t think going back to Sheffield Wednesday would happen any time soon. But as soon as the draw was made I have been looking forward to it.”

The fixture against one of his old sides comes days after Flint hit a personal milestone. Saturday’s win over Stockport saw him rack up 500 senior appearances.

He added: “If you had said to me when I first turned professional I would play 500 games I would have snapped your hand off.

“I am grateful for all the games I’ve played. But I don’t want to stop now – I want to carry on. There have been many highlights from making my debut to three promotions and a cup win at Wembley. I am delighted to be playing at Mansfield Town now. I didn’t do a pre-season so I am still getting up to full sharpness but that will only come with playing games.”
