Newcastle United had been closely linked to signing Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer but talks fizzled out due to his hefty six-figure wage packet. Reports at the time discussed the difference in his earnings compared to the players at St James’ Park, and how even on a loan move, he would be the highest paid player on the books.

The Magpies had been searcing for new left-back options for some time and eventually, Eddie Howe and his team shifted their attention to Lewis Hall instead, who has signed on a season-long deal. Not only has this completely ended their connection with Cucurella but it would have certainly been a slap in the face for him to see his suitors opt for his Chelsea teammate instead.

Cucurella’s sights were set on joining Newcastle during their talking stages and he was said to be open to making the switch this window. He is yet to feature for the Blues this season, having been left on the bench for all three Premier League fixtures so far.

However, the Spaniard now looks set to join another Champions League-challenging side and Fabrizio Romano has revealed it is Newcastle’s direct top four rivals Manchester United. The transfer expert posted an update on Twitter and has revealed the Reds “have reached an agreement in principle with Cucurella on personal terms.”

With just a matter of days left before the transfer window closes, it’s full steam ahead to get the deal over the line and Romano has reported that “Man United won’t negotiate for any other left-back now” as they are prioritising talks with Chelsea and want to get the Cucurella deal wrapped up as soon as possible.

Newcastle have enjoyed a fruitful summer in terms of signings and along with their introduction of Hall, they’ve also brought in Harvey Barnes, Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento, and Yankuba Minteh
