Negotiations between Werder Bremen and Leeds United for the transfer of midfielder Ilia Gruev are “advanced,” according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Sports News Germany journalist provided supporters with an update via his personal Twitter page (30 August), revealing that the 23-year-old midfielder was keen on the move to Elland Road.

Plettenberg reported that the transfer fee for the Bulgaria international could be up to £5.1million, describing the deal as “hot.”

While negotiations for Gruev are not yet complete, talks between the two clubs are now advanced with just a matter of days left to get the transfer across the line.

It appears that the Whites are close to finally landing a central midfielder, and what a signing it could prove to be. Gruev has been a part of the Werder Bremen first-team setup since bursting onto the scene in 2019 and made 31 appearcnes in the German top flight last season.

Despite being just 23 years of age, he has plenty of experience of football at the highest level, and this blend of youth as well as know-how could prove very useful in the club’s fight for promotion from the Championship back into the Premier League.

Considering the way negotiations ended last time they tried to bring a midfielder over from Germany, fans will be forgiven for not getting their hopes up just yet, although it does appear as if a deal could now be close.

Time is against both sides though to get the transfer finalised with Friday’s deadline looming large.
