Leicester City have joined the race to sign Manchester City midfielder James McAtee this summer, according to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan with Sheffield United, helping the club to achieve promotion back to the Premier League, but has since returned to Manchester City with the view to being loaned back out.

Who is James McAtee?

The attacking midfielder has risen through the ranks at the Etihad Stadium, alongside the likes of Callum Doyle and Phil Foden. Last season, McAtee enjoyed his first senior loan spell with Sheffield United, making 43 appearances and contributing to 13 goals.

McAtee has earned three caps for the England U21s and has featured in the Premier League this season, coming off the bench during City’s 3-0 win against Burnley on the opening weekend of the season.

The perfect start

Leicester City are the only side in the Championship that has a 100% record after their opening four league games. They also sit two points ahead at the top of the league table.

The Foxes came from behind to beat Coventry, before picking up wins against Huddersfield, Cardiff City and Rotherham United, proving that despite losing Harvey Barnes and James Maddison, the club can still pick up wins in a new era for the side.

What’s been said?

According to Pete O’Rourke, Leicester City have joined Wolverhampton Wanderers and McAtee’s former club Sheffield United in the race to land the midfielder this summer.

The Blades reportedly lead the chase to sign him but Leicester will be hopeful that the pull factor of Callum Doyle and manager Enzo Maresca can persuade Pep Guardiola’s side.

Writer’s View

McAtee played a starring role for Sheffield United last season, which means it is no surprise that have been linked with a second loan spell for the midfielder.

However, Leicester have a strong chance due to their current relationship with the club, despite the fact that they are in the Championship and not the Premier League.
