Coventry City have had a £4 million bid for Barnsley captain Liam Kitching rejected, ahead of tomorrow’s transfer deadline according to journalist Andy Giddings.

This was the second bid from the Sky Blues after their initial £2.5 million offer was turned down, with Mark Robins’ side desperate for a defender before the window closes tomorrow.

Who is Liam Kitching?

The Barnsley captain began his career at Leeds United, before having spells with Harrogate Town and Forest Green Rovers before eventually signing for Barnsley in January 2021.

Since then, Kitching has been made captain of the League One side and has gone on to make almost 100 appearances at Oakwell, featuring in the Championship and League One, reaching the play-off final before losing to Sheffield Wednesday. He’s scored once in four games so far this season.

A positive start

Coventry City suffered an opening day loss to Leicester City but have since gone unbeaten in their next three games, beating Middlesbrough 3-0, before draws against Swansea and Sunderland.

The Sky Blues have been busy this summer with ten new additions to the Championship side, following their play-off final defeat against Luton Town.

What’s been said?

Journalist Andy Giddings posted a tweet on Twitter confirming the news, which stated…

Understand Barnsley have rejected a bid of 4million pounds from Coventry City for Liam Kitching.

The Skyblues initial offer of 2.5m was also turned down.’

Writer’s View

With Mark Robins already signing Bobby Thomas and Brad Collins who both featured for Barnsley last season, plus the requirement for another defender, I think it’s almost certain that the club will make a third and final bid for the defender.

Kitching has remained loyal to Barnsley but has expressed his desire to play at a higher level, which suits Coventry. As a Coventry fan, I’d love to see him join but I wouldn’t want us to pay over £5 million.
