Ben Foster has disclosed how much money he used to make as a Premier League player for West Bromwich Albion.
After 12 appearances for the Welsh club, the former England international left Wrexham in August and returned to retirement.
Foster revealed his weekly salary at the height of his success at West Brom on his podcast, Fozcast.
Between 2012 and 2018, the goalkeeper made 223 appearances for the Baggies, and he acknowledged being among the team’s highest-paid players at the time.
Foster recalled: “I believe my first deal at West Brom in 2012 was for £40,000 a week.
I was among the higher earnings; I was certainly not the highest earner, but I was among the higher earners.
After the Baggies were demoted from the Premier League at the conclusion of the 2017–18 season, the 40-year-old left West Brom to join Watford.
Four seasons at Vicarage Road would pass before Foster announced his retirement.
Former club Wrexham lured him out of retirement, and the Hollywood-owned team’s success last season included promotion back to the Football League thanks in large part to the former Manchester United goalie.
Foster was demoted while playing for Birmingham City and Watford, yet he was still able to maintain West Brom in the Premier League until his final season.
He disclosed that if the team had been relegated after he signed his initial four-year contract in 2012, his pay would have considerably decreased if he had continued to play for them in the Championship.
I have a condition in my contract, Foster remarked. If we were demoted, my salary would be cut to £25,000.
I would have been earning £25,000 a week and playing for West Brom in the Championship with three years left on my contract.
“They would have gone back up to £40,000 [a week] if we had been promoted again the very next season.”
