LIAM Scales of CELTIC received accolades from coach Brendan Rodgers for his player-of-the-match effort in his team’s 1-0 victory over Rangers today.

The former Shamrock Rovers defender appeared to be leaving Celtic last season after a successful loan to Aberdeen, and in recent weeks he has been linked with a return to Pittordie.

Scales has started two league games for the defending champions this season due to a defensive crisis, and Rodgers is pleased with his effort.

The manager told Sky Sports, “He took time away from the club, but what I can count on, he is a warrior.”

“He stood up, won his headers, and was gutsy, which is sometimes required.

“We played very, very well in the first half with our football and some of our combination play, connecting the game. However, whenever I’ve won here, there have been times when you had to defend, and the players were outstanding.

Rodgers acknowledged that he was subject to considerable media pressure before the remarkable 1-0 Premiership victory at Ibrox.

Kyogo Furuhashi’s late first-half goal increased the Hoops’ lead over Rangers to four points after four games despite the absence of some important players, a Viaplay Cup loss to Kilmarnock, and a home draw with St. Johnstone.

“I understand I have been placed on death watch by the media,” Rodgers stated following the game

“However, as a coach, you have no control over that.

“I comprehend what we have and what we lack, at least from my perspective.

“We have to keep working, developing, and improving until we get the level of player back that will make a difference in some of our games, and I have no doubt whatsoever that we will achieve that as the season progresses.

“But listen, the league record is three wins and a draw, and some of the matches have been good, but we are still putting the pieces of a team together that will look much more like it by the end of the season,” the coach said.

In the first half, a VAR decision that went against Rangers infuriated them.

Gustaf Lagerbielke, a defender for Celtic, was pressed.

Despite the fact that it appeared to be a mild foul, referee Don Robertson disallowed the goal after consulting the pitchside monitor at the request of the video assistant referee.

Listen, there are already enough people looking at it, Rodgers replied. ‘You’ve got to learn your lesson there,’ I said Gus at halftime.

“You need to start passing the ball more quickly, and he might need another perspective there sooner. However, as he turns around after saying so, he receives a cut.

“You may feel resentful if you are a Michael (Beale) and Rangers supporter. But we were winning the game at that moment.

So I wouldn’t have been as thrilled if we had given in.

However, they carefully examined it.
