West Bromwich Albion defender Erik Pieters’ wife has revealed she has been given the all-clear from severe breast cancer.
Nermina Pieters-Mekic, 33, confirmed the news on Instagram and gave an explanation for her lengthy silence on her social media accounts.
The defender Pieters, who joined Albion from Burnley in September of last year and has made five appearances this season, is married to the model and show jumper and they have a two-year-old daughter together.
“And just like that, my life changed forever,” the note said. I visited a GP a few months back after noticing a lump in my left breast, but he didn’t seem very worried.
“After some persuasion from my mother, I made the decision to look into it more because the lump was becoming more painful and larger.
“I’m very glad I did since on July 10 I learned I had aggressive early-stage breast cancer.
“I’ll never be able to adequately express how I felt on that day and the days that followed. I was terrified, my heart was broken, and I had a lot of questions. How is this possible for someone my age when I’m healthy and fit?
Nermina has approximately 79,000 Instagram followers and had an appearance on ITV’s The Real Housewives of Cheshire. Many people left notes on the website, including Chantelle Heskey, the wife of former England forward Emile, and former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan.
