On deadline day, Nottingham Forest pulled off a “outstanding” coup, according to talkSPORT analyst Andy Townsend.

On September 1st, the Tricky Trees added five new players, with Ibrahim Sangare joining Callum Hudson-Odoi, Nicolas Dominguez, Odysseas Vlachodimos, and Nuno Tavares at the City Ground.

The former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder, who has seen him play for PSV, thinks the Reds’ £30 million acquisition may be one of the season’s top purchases.

What did Andy Townsend say about Ibrahim Sangaré?

Townsend was gushing praise for Forest and their new addition after their 1-0 away victory over Chelsea. Forest is presently ranked ninth in the Premier League.

He said the following on talkSPORT:

“Ally and I were discussing Forest. They played exceptionally well, and they won against Chelsea.

“Also, they signed one young man, Ibrahim Sangare, I tell you what. He is a fantastic player and very good.

“Me and Ally have watched him a little bit with PSV playing Rangers recently and he’s been really good to watch.”

Is Sangaré a good signing for Forest?

Steve Cooper, the manager of Nottingham Forest, appears to have pulled off a major coup by signing the Ivorian, who was sought after by some of the top Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea.

Sangaré made 140 appearances with PSV (where he signed in 2020) before agreeing to a five-year deal with Nottingham Forest, making 15 goals and contributing 10 assists across all competitions.

Aad De Moss, a former PSV and Ajax manager, praised the 25-year-old very highly in 2022, according to Voetbal 4U.

He stated:

“Leicester’s midfield is worse on one leg than Ibrahim Sangaré.

He is exceptional and has dominated PSV this season. Sangeré is only missed when he isn’t performing.

He is undoubtedly capable of playing for Arsenal and Tottenham.

“Sangaré is a fantastic athlete. I believe €35m to be a fair price.

“It’s a great deal. He’s a good player who, in my opinion, would start for all those teams.

“You need someone like that, who picks up a ball and keeps his shoe pointed between everything. Additionally, he has become more dangerous recently when heading toward the opponent’s goal.

The midfielder supports the Dutch legend’s praise with exceptional on-field displays; according to Sofascore, he was PSV’s fifth-best performer last season with an average rating of 7.24.

Furthermore, according to FBref, he is among the top 24% of midfielders in Europe for tackles and the top 1% for ball recoveries, both per 90 minutes.

He also scores in the top 35% for shot-creating actions per 90 minutes and the top 5% for through balls completed.

This demonstrates his versatility as one of Europe’s most effective midfielders, as he can support his team offensively while still working tirelessly to support the defense.

Since getting promoted to the Premier League, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis hasn’t been afraid to sign fresh talent; in the most recent transfer window, he signed 13 players in total, seven of whom were signed on the final day of the window. However, it appears that Sangaré might be the best of the bunch.
