The Boston Celtics would probably welcome a return from it’s former star, but Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe reports that it is “unlikely” that the former NBA great will re-sign with the Celtics.

Griffin played in 41 games for the Celtics last season, averaging 4.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting 48.5% from the field, 34.8% from beyond the arc, and 65.6% from the line. The Oklahoma product has played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, and Celtics in 765 games, averaging 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists.

Griffin can still contribute valuable minutes as a reserve in the NBA despite no longer being a standout player. It will be interesting to see where Griffin plays in the upcoming season. The six-time All-Star’s career earnings total over $258 million.

Griffin may benefit the Clippers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors next season, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, if he decides not to rejoin the Boston Celtics. The Heat lost to the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Finals in five games, the Warriors lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round in six games, and Griffin’s former team, the Clippers, lost to the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in five games.

The addition of Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards this offseason, along with the trades of Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies and Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks, will change the way the Celtics look in the upcoming season.

The majority of NBA observers think the Celtics will start Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Porzingis, and Al Horford in their starting lineup next year.
