Under new manager Russell Martin, Onauchu, 29, has only made one appearance, and that was as a substitute in the EFL Cup.

The Nigerian international was acquired for £18 million in January to increase Nathan Jones’ options, but he has not benefited from the game model’s total transformation.

Onuachu, who is six feet six inches tall and joined Saints from Genk having tallied 16 goals in his previous 13 league games in Belgium, has yet to score a goal for Saints.

The Daily Mail and Turkish tabloids both claim that Onuachu is now in discussions with Trabzonspor over a loan deal.

While the transfer window has closed in England due to Saints’ decision to hold onto Che Adams and their acquisition of Ross Stewart from Sunderland, it is still open in Turkey.

Earlier in the transfer window, Trabzonspor also acquired Saints’ Mislav Orsic, a failed January signing, but the Croatian international was seriously hurt while training.

Onuachu’s release is welcomed by Saints manager Martin, but the team is unlikely to recuperate much of the money they spent on the striker.

Clubs in Turkey have till September 15 to sign players. Winger Nicolas Pepe of Arsenal has recently joined Trabzonspor.
